K+D Group sells core business pharmaceutical packaging

The K+D Group sells its core business of pharmaceutical packaging to German-Swedish and globally active AR Packaging. The K+D Group with K+D Immo AG and K+D Valueinvest AG remain in the possession of Stefan Kuhn.

Mergers in the pharmaceutical and medtech industries have increased enormously in recent years. At the same time, the Pharma folding box has become a commodity business between globally active pharmaceutical and their packaging groups as suppliers. This accelerating and necessary consolidation of the folding carton and packaging industry is also reflected in the fact that K+D has been the only and last Swiss family SME since 2002 to specialise entirely in the pharmaceutical, medical technology and cosmetics markets with refined medical carton packaging.

K+D AG will have significantly greater development opportunities in the future if it is integrated into a worldwide network of locations as an extremely productive and profitable group unit. After 85 years of management and responsibility, the owner family has therefore decided to sell the core business originally started in 1883.

'If you can't beat them - join them. As a family entrepreneur who has two adult children, studying business administration at the University of St.Gallen and would be able to follow, it takes a lot of strength to get out now instead of waiting and running the risk of missing the exit time. It is therefore a strategic step to follow the market and its consolidation. The decision was therefore made in favour of our international and national customers and, especially, in favour of our jobs', emphasises Stefan Kuhn, previous owner and long-standing Chairman of the Board of Directors, who headed the company as CEO from 1995 to 2017. In the future, he will be active as a member of the Board of Directors of ARP subsidiary K+D AG and will also advise on the integration and establishment of the pharmaceutical business within the Group.

Harald Schulz, Group CEO AR Packaging, is also completely convinced that 'it is a classic win-win situation for customers, employees and both contractual partners’.
European benchmarks of recent years show impressively that K+D is the most productive pharmaceutical folding carton plant in Europe with state-of-the-art machinery that is precisely tailored to the order structure of its customers. Financially sound, K+D has already solved the management succession issue. Thanks to well-trained and motivated employees, supply chain management thinking from the supplier to the customer, standardization, knowledge of pharmaceutical GMP and Kaizen/Just-in-time, K+D is top positioned.

The K+D Group, now consisting of K+D Immo AG (commercial real estate) and K+D Valueinvest AG (investments), will strategically realign itself under its owner family Stefan Kuhn and actively and passively manage existing and future investments.

The parties to the acquisition have agreed that no financial details will be disclosed.
